The Wake is a gathering of spirits, relatives, friends and lovers. Culminating in the form of objects, the artist Nell explores binary opposites: life and death, happiness and sadness, light and dark. From its inclusion in the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, to its display at the Shepparton Art Museum in Victoria, The Wake now also exists in this first book on Nell's practice. Published by STATION, this monograph includes words by Julie Ewington and images of the 41 works that make up The Wake.
Nell’s practice traverses performance, sculpture, music, and painting. Small, intimate objects are just as probable as immersive installations. Her works embody an ongoing interest in contemporary manifestations of spiritual traditions, the inherent histories and magic of materials, the Karmic ghosts of existence, getting intimate with mortality and impermanence, what it means to be in a body, Rock ‘n’ Roll’s potential for transcendence and the power of words in any font!
