Mark Titmarsh book launch: Expanded Painting: Ontological Aesthetics and the Essence of Colour

The relevance of painting has been questioned many times over the last century, by the arrival of photography, installation art and digital technologies. But rather than accept the death of painting, Mark Titmarsh traces a paradoxical interface between this art form and its opposing forces to define a new practice known as 'expanded painting', giving the term historical context, theoretical structure and an important place in contemporary practice.

The Wake is a gathering of spirits, relatives, friends and lovers. Culminating in the form of objects, the artist Nell explores binary opposites: life and death, happiness and sadness, light and dark. From its inclusion in the 2016 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, to its display at the Shepparton Art Museum in Victoria, The Wake now also exists in this first book on Nell's practice. Published by STATION, this monograph includes words by Julie Ewington and images of the 41 works that make up The Wake.

Portrait Session is a performance in which Japanese artist Ken Kagami attempts the complicated task of creating work that is straightforwardly funny. Viewers are actively invited to participate by sitting for a free portrait drawn by the artist, which will imaginatively consider certain discreet parts of the sitter's body (unlike the traditional artist’s model, it will not be necessary for participants to undress).

Lost Rocks (2017–21) is an ambitious, slow-publishing artwork – a library of forty books, four books published twice yearly for the next five years. Forty single traces, ten dynamic seams, or one spectacular forty-rock Lost Rocks Library. Brought to life by Australian artists Justy Phillips and Margaret Woodward (A Published Event) and composed by forty contemporary artists from around the world, Lost Rocks is an accumulative event of mineralogical, metaphysical and metallurgical telling.

Studio A: Greg Sindel and Leigh Rigozzi

A visual reading from Sindel’s comic book adaptation of Moby Dick. Sindel has developed his storytelling craft since childhood, overcoming considerable learning difficulties to develop into a fluent wordsmith and illustrator. He is mentored by artist Leigh Rigozzi and has collaborated with arts organisations Erth and Curiousworks.
